Tropical and Neglected Infectious Diseases: An Integrated One Health Approach to Public Health

Some characteristics:
Study of diseases that are typical from tropical areas as malaria, yellow fever, schistosomiasis and others. Also, the study of infectious diseases such as the ones caused by an infection of HTLV-1 and of genetic pathologies, as the falciform anemia that is considered to be neglected in studies.  There will be emphasized the vectors, hosts and intrinsic mechanisms to the organism, as well as the impact of these diseases regarding environmental health, while the cause of outbreaks and epidemies. There will also be studied the conditions of the origin and Evolution, as well as obstacles for the control of tropical diseases that are neglected in Brazil and in other developing countries. The teaching staff is made of professors/ researchers in the areas of study.

Prerequisites:
- Students, researchers and professional of Medicine; Biology and other fields of Health Sciences.
- The classes will be taught in English.

Course synopsis:
Overview this interdisciplinary course covers a range of topics related to infectious diseases and their impact on public health. The course emphasizes the One Health approach, which recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. It will be discussed about the major waterborne diseases in Brazil and their implications for public health, as well as wastewater genomics surveillance strategies, transmission of arbo-viruses and neglected diseases such as Chaga's disease, malaria, leishmaniasis, HTLV, Hansen's disease and Tuberculosis. General aspects of
disease in Brazil and current research avenues in the country also will be discussed. Finally, will be explored the sense of neglected diseases in Bahia, with a focus on the place of populations and territories. Some study visits will take place throughout the program.

Course synopsis:
Essential: intermediate knowledge in English.
Desirable: knowledge of molecular biology, celular biology, pathology, microbiology and ecology.

Course Location:
- Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Cabula Campus.

The course will include technical visits tosome locations that are directly related to the content covered in the course. These visits will provide knowledge and real-world
examples that will help enhance your learning experience.
