Tropical and Neglected Infectious Diseases: An Integrated One Health Approach to Public Health
Multiprofessional
Course Description:
This interdisciplinary course provides an in-depth exploration of infectious diseases and their association with public health implications. By incorporating perspectives from epidemiology, microbiology, veterinary medicine, and environmental science, this course offers a comprehensive and evidence-based analysis of infectious disease dynamics.
The course emphasizes the One Health approach, which recognizes the complex interconnection between human, animal, and environmental health. It underscores the necessity of integrated strategies for disease surveillance, prevention, and control.
It highlights the critical role of these approaches in addressing emerging and re-emerging infectious threats, fostering a holistic understanding of public health challenges in a globalized world.
Participants will discuss major waterborne diseases in Brazil and their implications for public health, as well as wastewater genomics surveillance strategies, the transmission of arboviruses, and neglected diseases such as Chagas disease, malaria, leishmaniasis, HTLV, sporotrichosis, Hansen’s disease, and tuberculosis. Additionally, the relationship between diseases and environmental degradation will be explored, leading to a discussion on the meaning of neglected diseases in the case study of Bahia, focusing on populations and territories. Some study visits will take place throughout the program.
